In sickness and in health, to keep and to hold – whether you remember or not.
A Utah couple’s love story involves a breakup, a dramatic accident, memory loss and a heartfelt reunion that many people online are equating with the plot of a Hallmark movie.
Jenna Brotherson married her current husband Mitchell seven months after their breakup – but only because an injury made her forget they weren’t together.
“When people ask us about our love story, it’s our favorite part to tell,” she said.
Jenna and Michelle, now 27, were friends for several months before they started dating.
But in February 2020, Jenna broke up with her then-boyfriend because she was “too overwhelmed with life”.
The next day, Mitchell was skiing on Utah’s Beaver Mountain when he attempted a flip, became unconscious and woke up as paramedics were taking him to the hospital.
He suffered serious injuries and immediately called Jenna and asked her to pick him up because he couldn’t drive.
“I’m like, ‘Why is he sending me this message? I just broke up with him,'” Jenna recalls in a video posted to TikTok.
It turned out that, due to Michelle’s injury, he had forgotten that they were separated.
“Mitch kept messaging me and trying to hang out after his stroke and I was confused as to why he would keep messaging me since we were broken up,” she said. told people,
“I thought maybe he took the statement about being friends really seriously. It got to the point where I told him that me and my roommates had had a rough day and he came over and bought us ice cream.
Jenna very quickly realized that she had made a mistake by ending her romance with Michelle and she appreciated how “kind and considerate” he remained.
Recalling the day she got a message from Michelle asking her to hang out the day she returned from spring break, Jenna said, “I was nervous to swallow my pride and ask if she Will date again.”
When Jenna finally asked him to get back together, she realized he had no idea they weren’t together.
He told her about their breakup and although Michelle remembered talking to him in the car that day, she could not remember what the conversation was about.
“They thought it was very funny and I was relieved. It made it easier to get back together because to him, we were never even together!” Jenna shared.
Five months later the couple got engaged. Less than three weeks later, they were married on September 4, 2020.
“During my husband’s speech, he talked about not only what he remembered about the breakup, but how grateful he was that everything worked out in the end,” Jenna said.
