A mysterious gunman randomly fired shots at a South Carolina woman and her miniature beagle in their own backyard late last month — with one bullet passing through the pup’s mouth and nearly killing her.
Tiffany Noel was brushing her teeth before bed on Sunday, October 20, when she heard gunshots outside her home in Lancaster, about an hour north of Charlotte. According to WSOC-TV 9.
According to the station, she then heard her beagle, Copper — who was in the backyard for a nighttime bathroom run — screaming and howling around 10 p.m.
“All of a sudden, I heard a very loud noise,” Noel told the station. “So, I ran. I was like, ‘My dog has to be scared to death.’ “I ran to the door and opened the door, and he was like screaming.”
A bullet grazed his arm when she came out to check on him — and he bled to death as the hidden shooter fired more rounds, according to a GoFundMe set up by a friend to cover the dog’s medical bills. Took the puppy inside.
“After they got inside, the gunfire continued,” the fundraiser said. “Tiffany called 911, not caring about herself but wanting to save Copper, who was bleeding rapidly.”
Noel is reportedly okay after being shot, but Copper needs a long recovery time, as a bullet knocked out his teeth and fractured his jaw, which required an operation and pins to repair.
“It’s badly broken,” Noel told the station. “When he opens his mouth, you can hear the bones rattling in there.”
Lancaster police are investigating the shooting, which they say may be related to gang violence, and are searching for a suspect.
Noel said he heard gunshots in the distance.
Meanwhile, she has already spent nearly $3,000 caring for her injured puppy.
“You can’t expect things like this. No one can prepare for this,” he said.
“It has been very good economically. Emotionally, I’m basically in shock being in my own house.”
The online fundraiser said police found bullet holes in Tiffany’s cars, on the side of her house and on her porch.
“While we are grateful that Tiffany is safe and Copper is safe, they have suffered a traumatic, unimaginable event in their own home, where they should feel safe,” the fundraiser said.
