“I knew he was a little cuckoo,” said the unidentified neighbor, who claimed he had known Routh for nearly two decades when he lived in Greensboro. Fox 8 “He's going away for a long time,” he added on Sunday.
However, the woman was still stunned that the dedicated Democrat would target the former president.
“I mean, trying to shoot Trump? That's a lot. I would have never guessed, and I swear, no, that's not him,” Routh's former neighbor said.
“I just can't believe it. I mean, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I mean the pictures and everything, I wouldn't have believed it.”
He claimed that while Routh was living in the Tar Heel State, he had seen him with “a lot of guns,” and that his behavior instilled fear in others in the neighborhood.
“I've seen the guns myself and everything, and, yeah, they had a lot of guns and stuff in there, and, yeah, a lot of people were scared of them that day,” he told the outlet.
The surprised neighbor said she last spoke to Routh in May before he moved to Hawaii.
He claimed nothing seemed wrong when the alleged killer left North Carolina.
“He told me it was his last day here and he hugged me saying goodbye, and yes, he actually hugged me,” she told the outlet.
He said Routh also gifted him a Hawaiian shirt and recruited his son to help with the job.
“I thought he was just having fun with his girlfriend in Hawaii,” his former neighbor said.
“For him to kill the president, that's crazy.”
Routh's LinkedIn page shows he attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, but moved to Hawaii around 2018.

On Sunday, Secret Service agents spotted Routh with an AK-47 rifle near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
They set up a GoPro camera on a fence to record the shootout, and set up a makeshift sniper nest in bushes along the golf course to wait for Trump to appear.
The Secret Service opened fire on Routh, who fled the scene and was arrested. Arrested on I-95 The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported the incident shortly after.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect hit the shot on the fifth hole around 2 p.m. while hiding near a chain-link fence about 300 to 500 yards from Trump — adding that “with a rifle and binoculars, that's not a long distance.”
The suspect's motives are not yet known.
