It’s already being lauded as the Australian Yellowstone, the Kevin Costner-led drama series based on the critically acclaimed epic about a family of ranchers in Montana.
Stars Sam Corlett and Philippa Northeast, who play Marshall and Susie Lawson, recently shared details about their experience filming on a real cattle station in the heart of Australia’s Northern Territory.
Filming in the Outback
The series was filmed on Tipperary Station, one of the world’s largest cattle properties, located 194 km from Darwin and covering an impressive 386,000 hectares (although the world’s largest cattle station is actually Anna in South Australia. is creek).
“It’s amazing. We shot the show on a working animal station, so we’re dancing around all these people doing their jobs,” explains Corlett. 7NEWS.com.au.
“Some of the staff join our show as extras, which is incredible because we get a chance to act with a real-life deal.”
Northeast said that “the way it puts Australia on a different level cinematically is astonishing”.
“I had never been to the Top End before filming, and it’s like seeing a postcard come to life. Sometimes I think, ‘This could be the African Savanna’, because it looks so epic and extreme.
Filming in such a remote location presented many challenges.
Corlett remembers shooting during wet weather as particularly difficult.
“It was about 45C, and we’re running around on the rocks. I slipped up and ended up with a good scar, but that heat added to the authenticity of our characters’ experiences.
“We adopted a harshness to infuse the story with real grit.”
Northeast shared a memorable experience that included a romantic scene filmed at Wanggu Waterfall, where the romance had to be recreated around real-life wildlife.
“It was beautiful and intimate, but they had to put meat in crocodile nets to keep the crocodiles away from us,” she recalls.
“Trying to relax and be romantic while knowing this is a challenge, but it just added to the excitement of filming.”
One of the extraordinary experiences for Corlett was taking a helicopter ride over breathtaking landscapes.
“I got to see the amazingness of the Northern Territory from above – flying over the water, seeing buffalo, and even crocodiles in their natural habitat. It was wild,” he says.
“The ecosystem is very vibrant and alive, and it really ties into our story about apex predators, both human and animal, controlling the land,” he says.
The show follows the Lawson family when Marian Station is left without a clear heir and generational conflicts threaten to tear the family apart.
Sensing that a once-great dynasty is collapsing, the Outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle traders, desert gangsters, indigenous elders and billionaire miners – move in for the kill.
