In one picture, the Aussie actress peers through a sheer black veil, wearing a black bra, sheer black top and suspenders.
In another, she lies on a mirror floor wearing a black bra, knickers and black gloves, her hair pulled into a severe, slick-backed style.
The sultry pictures, taken by Mario Sorrenti, hark back to the sexy “glamazon” photographs that defined fashion photographs of the 1970s and 1980s.
Kidman, clearly a fan of the shoot, shared the images to Instagram, writing: “Loved gracing your cover, @ElleUSA! Thank you @NinaGarcia for the honour and to @EiffelTyler for your beautiful words xx.”
Kidman’s Instagram followers were blown away by the sexy images.
“Babe!!” fellow Aussie actress Teresa Palmer wrote, while supermodel Cindy Crawford dropped a “fire” emoji.
“She’s hot,” wrote one fan, while another said, “Always relevant, always stunning!”
“Swoon,” one follower wrote.
“Still amazing.”
But not everyone was a fan of the sexy shoot.
“Stunning as always but I do in general still worry why all our mainstream magazines continue to objectify women in their photo shoots,” one follower wrote.
“This woman doesn’t need to prove anything, as she is one of our generation’s most outstanding and prolific actors who is elegant, intelligent, independent and beautiful.
“That is what we need to see and celebrate!!”
Apart from the barely-there lingerie, Kidman rocked a number of high fashion looks, including a strapless Saint Laurent jumpsuit, and a high necked, avant-garde white Balenciaga outfit.
In the interview accompanying the shoot, Kidman revealed that although she is a red carpet regular, known for her bold fashion choices, she usually can’t wait to get home from big events.
“It feels a little unreal at times,” she admitted about the endless rounds of promotional events, fashion parties and awards ceremonies.
“I want to get out, take my dress off and put my jammies on.
“It’s kind of like the opposite of Cinderella — I’m happy to go home and just go back to me.”
Despite her confidence and years of experience in attending such events, the actress said they could sometimes be a little “overwhelming”.
“I’m like, ‘I need to go home now. I’m very tired’,” she admitted.
“I want to get warm, and I want to curl up, and I want to feel real.”
In January, Kidman gave Sunrise viewers a rare insight into her “real” family life, which she shares with husband Keith Urban and their daughters Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13.
Sitting down with Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew, Kidman was asked if her daughters had seen any of her early films, such as BMX Bandits.
“They’ve watched BMX Bandits, they love BMX Bandits!” Kidman said.
“But they aren’t that interested in my work,” she added.
“It’s kind of great.
“I don’t have to worry about that, in the sense that they have very full lives themselves, and I just get out of the way!”
The Hollywood star also has two children, Connor and Isabella, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise.
