A New Jersey Uber Eats driver thought she was delivering a burrito to a customer when a strong, unmistakable smell revealed she was actually smoking marijuana, according to police.
According to Washington Township Police, the woman picked up a simple food order from a location in Lindenwold, Camden County, on Friday night – a burrito wrapped in tin foil, a soup and a bottle of water.
But as she was driving she recognized a smell coming from the bag of food – and it wasn’t carnitas.
“He believed there was something wrong with his delivery package. He thought it smelled like marijuana,” Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gursick. 6 Told ABC,
He stopped himself and called the police.
An officer arrived and “inspected the package and determined it was not a burrito meal,” Gursick said.
“There was no meat, or salad, or beans or rice. It was literally an ounce of marijuana,” he said.
Photos from the department show large zip-lock bags of shrink-wrapped pots wrapped inside aluminum foil.
According to police, the food did not come from a restaurant, meaning the suspects were using the Uber option to deliver the packages.
Uber does not allow delivery of drugs, alcohol, and other illegal substances.
An Uber spokesperson called the incident “extremely disturbing” and urged drivers to contact local authorities if they see or smell anything suspicious.
No charges have been filed in the case.
Washington Township police said they experienced a similar situation over the summer when an Uber driver was asked to deliver a fraudulent gift card, 6 ABC reports.
