Game of Thrones fans appear to be getting their hopes up about Daemon’s vision in the House of the Dragon season finale, which flashed all the way forward to the grand threat of the White Walkers, and showed Daenerys and her dragons.
Given the fact that Daemon was being shown “the prophecy” here, fans believe that this is the show confirming that in fact, Daenerys was the fabled Prince that was Promised after all, a concept that was muddled in Thrones as it wove between Dany and Jon Snow (sometimes even Tyrion?) fulfilling that prophecy, but nothing was ever fully confirmed, as everyone is seeming to wait for George RR Martin to spell it out in his books, if he ever finishes them.
And…that’s the problem here. Showrunner Ryan Condal wants to make it very clear he was not overstepping Martin’s work and that this sequence did not confirm Daenerys was the Prince that was Promised. Here he is speaking to THR:
“Remember that Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire, House of the Dragon in many ways, are warnings about the perils of power and people in power and absolute power … [and the reason there was no Jon Snow was] the connectivity for us is specifically in and around the dragons … The connectedness between this family and the family to come … We know who Daenerys is watching that image, but Daemon has no idea — that could be his future daughter with Rhaenyra … So for that reason, I think it was important that it was Daenerys the image. We are not trying to make any kind of specific interpretation of a prophecy that has yet to be revealed by its author. That is George’s space to tell that story.”
Fans very much seem to want the prophecy to be about Dany. I mean, you Google “The Prince that was Promised” and the site spits out a big, bold DAENERYS TARGARYEN at the top. But no it has not been confirmed by anyone, including this sequence. The other hope by many fans is that Martin will alter the show’s ending that turns Dany into a villain, razing King’s Landing and killed by Jon Snow. Supposedly Martin told the showrunners what his ending was, but it’s not clear if that’s what they did or even if it was, if he’s going to stick with it by the time the final book is out in let’s say, 2040.
Another fun fact, that was not either a scene from the show or Emilia Clarke. It was a different actress named Imogen Ruby Little, as given that it was shot from behind, they didn’t need to show Clarke’s face:
She also says there was more footage shot that was cut. I wonder what that might have been.
