pittsburgh – After a drenching this week, the Northeast will face a rapid drop in temperatures, leading to suddenly freezing conditions and making travel through Thursday icy and dangerous.
On Wednesday, heavy rain fell across the Northeast, with high temperatures in the 50s and 60s in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and parts of Connecticut.
By Thursday morning, most of these areas will go from temperatures above zero to the 20s, known as a flash freeze.
Fox Weather meteorologist Craig Herrera explains why this could lead to dangerous conditions outside.
“When that happens, you basically go from a temperature above zero to a temperature below zero in a matter of hours. And all that water on the roads, leftover rain, maybe some mud, freezes quickly like that,” Herrera said. “And that makes it quite dangerous, especially for driving and walking. You can walk out your door. You have a small path or footpath. “It can be frozen.”
These conditions are possible Thursday morning in places like Scranton, Pennsylvania, where temperatures will be above zero at bedtime Wednesday and fall to 29 degrees by Thursday morning.
With a cool breeze, temperatures of 29 degrees will feel like the teens.
According to the Fox Forecast Center, flash freeze events are most common following a strong freeze and a sharp drop in temperatures.
