Special NYC’s longest-serving tour guide once drove this ‘Friends’ star around –


As New York City’s longest serving tour guide, Joyce Gold She has become such a local celebrity that sometimes she attracts more attention than the stars she brings to the Big Apple.

“And I always thought very highly of the ladies in choosing my tours,” said Gould, who began giving tours in 1976.

Her foray into the industry began when she was working as a systems analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank on Gold Street and came across a book about old New York.

“It was about the roads I passed every day between the metro and the office. And I didn’t know there were Indians on Broadway, there were Dutch, there were English,” recalled Gould, a graduate of Queens College who earned a master’s degree in metropolitan studies from New York University.

“When I read that the first battle of the American Revolution, the Battle of Golden Hill, began on my side of the chamber, it was truly astonishing.”

The Pennsylvania native, who moved to Bayside, Queens, in the ninth grade, organized her first tour for a group of friends.

“They paid me $3 because I wanted to make my professional debut,” she recalled. “And when I started, there were two other people I knew who were giving tours, but neither of them are still doing it.”

Gould, who lives in a loft in Chelsea, has more than 1,000 books on New York and designs tours that focus on the city’s rich history, such as “Forty Years Manhattan Was Dutch,” “Wall Street: From Windmills to World Finance,” “The American Revolution Downtown,” and “Roosevelt Island: From Lunatic Asylum to New Tech Hub.”

She hosts tours in 45 neighborhoods, most of which are in Manhattan and eight in Brooklyn. The most popular are in Greenwich Village, where she offers 36 different tours of that neighborhood alone.

An estimated 40,000 people have visited one or more of his tours in the nearly five decades he has been in business.

“Every time I said to a group, ‘I’ve been doing this for almost 50 years,’ the answer was almost invariably, ‘This is before I was born,'” she said, laughing.

“So I stopped saying that after a while.”
