If you’re someone who prefers to play it safe with neutrals, whether it’s your wardrobe or your home (especially your home), then let Obeetee’s new collection nudge you towards understanding the power of colour.
In collaboration with Tissage Rugs, Obeetee carpets created a mythical world of the ‘Chroma People’, a tribe that embodies earthy monochromes, sees colours through different eyes, almost like a divine entity, and uses colour as a metaphor and an analogy for the fabric of life.
Everything you need to know about the collaboration
Founded in 1920 in Mirzapur, Obeetee is recognised as one of the oldest and largest hand-woven carpet companies in the world. The 103-year-old company has previously collaborated with artists and designers, including Indian couturiers like Tarun Tahiliani and JJ Valaya, Chennai-based architect Shripal Munshi, and even British designer Matthew Williamson.
In the second collaboration with Tissage Rugs–a fourth-generation run family company, the collection explores four sets or rooms, each of which has a dedicated colour theme attached to it which encapsulates heritage, spirituality, and vibrancy. Talking about the collection, Angelique Dhama, CEO of Obeetee Carpet, shared how this newest collection sees colour through the lens of spirituality. “It [the collection] encapsulates the heritage, spirituality, and vibrancy of embracing the full spectrum of colours found in nature,” she says.
The colour theory
Green, which represents dawn, is annotated as a symbol of creativity and renewal, reflecting the new beginnings and transformative energy of dawn. Forenoon is captured in yellow tone, which signifies manifestations and daydreams, showcasing the power of thoughts and beliefs in weaving visionary potential into everyday life. Blue captures the time of high noon, which portrays the idea of cleansing and purity, washing away any negativity to leave you with a canvas of possibilities. The boldness of the colour red, which represents dusk, is an expression of faith in art, where each stroke becomes a sacred ritual, representing the divine essence infused into the fabric of life.
Ode to craftsmanship
The collection draws emphasis on weaving and craftsmanship which is almost spiritual. “The Chroma Collection is a journey of upliftment, weaving spirituality and craftsmanship into the very fabric of your spaces,” says Nikhil Kapoor, creative director of Tissage Rugs.
The wool and yarn that form the basis of the collection are symbolic of fostering a spiritual journey while preserving age-old weaving traditions. On Obeetee’s Instagram, you can even get a glimpse of the meticulous process that goes into making a single carpet, from weaving the yarn to dyeing.
So if you want to spruce up your home, carpets and rugs are a great way to add colour, especially if it’s mindfully crafted by two leading rugs and carpet manufacturers in India.
