Newton-John died at her home in Southern California in August 2022, at the age of 73, after a long battle with breast cancer that included three stages of the disease.
The singer famously turned her tragic health battle into a positive one, and became an advocate and champion for women suffering from the condition during her three-decade-long journey.
Brickman appeared on Monday The Morning ShowWhere he told about the exciting discovery.
“This is a song we wrote about 15 years ago,” he began.
“I was going through some of my old cassettes and I found a cassette that had My Dream written on it, and it was the one we recorded, but we never released it.”
Brickman said the pair first met about 25 years ago, when he was the opening act during one of Newton-John’s North American tours, and they became close friends.
“I have sung duets with people for many years, but there was nothing like that experience. (Newton-John) spoiled me because he treated me with so much respect.
“She would stand outside the stage, and I was at the piano, so I was looking right outside the stage, and she would stand there and just watch me at my show before she went out… sometimes with her With curlers in her hair, getting ready for her set.
“(She was just) very kind and respectful of my art. And then she would say, ‘Good on you.’ That was a really great set. And that never happens. And that hasn’t happened since.”
Brickman said that Olivia Newton-John’s family is thrilled with the new music, with proceeds from the song going to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund.
He said, “The most special thing about their response was that the entire recording and all the proceeds from its success would be donated to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund for Cancer Research.”
“Also because the name of the song is My Dream, and in her statement about the fund and cancer research she says that it was her dream to find a cure for cancer.”
Brickman said that they also got another demo called Change of Heart, so fans can get more new music in the future.
He said, “We wrote another song called Change of Heart, which you just featured on one of my TV specials where he guest-starred and I got the original demo of it.”
“We recorded it and put it out, so it doesn’t have that much significance as it’s never been heard before, but it was another cassette. I just thought, you know, this is the way it should be. She’s sending me this music.”
