One in four Americans feel bored by their life: survey

Well, that’s interesting.

One in four Americans feels bored by their life, according to a new study.

A Talker Research survey of 2,000 US residents found that more than a quarter — 27% — of respondents feel they’ve fallen into a mundane routine and “a bit [of a] boring” life.

The average respondent said they fantasize about going on some sort of adventure four times every day, but only 10% said they felt they could be adventurous on any given day, the survey commissioned by Storyteller Overland for American Adventures Month in August found.

And many of the Americans surveyed said they suffer from deeper daily mental loads than just being bored out of their minds — including anxiety (38%), fatigue (35%) and frustration (30%).

Over 60% said they are “in desperate need” of going on an adventure or trip this year.

“Looking at the data, it’s clear Americans are craving a break from their everyday routine,” Summer Trammell, chief engagement officer at Storyteller Overland, said in a statement.

Nearly half of the respondents defined an adventure as anything that takes them outside of their daily routine and 30% said an experience that makes them appreciate life more.

The top three things that drive Americans to seek out new adventures are the desire for warmer weather, the boredom of seeing the same, mundane surroundings every day and jealousy — 33% said seeing their family and friends go on trips makes them want to take one themselves.

The online survey, conducted between July 1 and 8, also found that 42 was the perfect age to go on an adventure with 36% of respondents saying they’ve become more adventurous with age.

Still, an overwhelming majority of respondents — 83% — said that adventure awaits at any age.

The majority of Americans, no matter the generation — between baby boomers, Gen X and millennials — take four to five trips per year, they said.

And they’re willing to travel far for a thrill.

On average, respondents said they’d be willing to go upwards of 2,7000 miles to escape their daily lives for a bit.

Most Americans felt that a six-day trip was the ideal amount of time for an adventure and listed Hawaii as a popular destination at 18% — followed by California (16%), Florida (14%), Alaska (13%) and Colorado (11%).

New York landed in sixth place at 10%.
