More than 10,000 batches of Costco eggs from a New York farm are being recalled over fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Potentially contaminated batches of Kirkland Signature Organic pasture-raised eggs were sold in 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee since Friday last week. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned on Wednesday.
The FDA said the recall of 10,800 cartons was initiated by New York-based Handsome Brook Farms after it learned that eggs not meant for sale were accidentally shipped out.
There is no news of anyone falling ill yet. However, Salmonella “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the recall notice warns.
The FDA says that even healthy people “often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.”
Shoppers are being asked to check their cartons for Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025, to confirm if they have purchased potentially contaminated eggs.
According to the statement, Handsome Brook Farms is ensuring that “additional supply chain controls and re-training” are being put in place to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
News of the contamination follows several recalls across the country, such as Carrot recall after deadly E.coli outbreakand another Recall of ready-to-eat meat contaminated with listeria, resulting in the death of 1 infant.
