At 8 feet 1 inch, 36-year-old Morteza Mehrzad is the second-tallest man in the world and the tallest athlete to have competed in the Paralympic Games.
Their height might help the Paralympian volleyball player spike the ball, but it doesn't help them stay comfortable on a normal-sized bed.
The Iranian athlete – who suffers from a rare medical condition called acromegaly, which causes excessive growth – has been forced to sleep on the floor in the athletes' Paralympic Village.
Iran head coach Hadi Rezaei told olympics.com His player was provided with a custom bed at the 2020 Tokyo Games, but not in Paris this year.
“He'd lay down on the floor,” the coach said.
However, Rezai insisted the two-time Paralympic champion was not letting his sleepy condition hamper him in the competition.
“That is the most important goal in his mind,” Rezai added. “It doesn’t matter to him if he will lie on the floor or if he won’t get enough to eat.
“Either way, he has his mind set on becoming a champion. Morteza can be considered the best player in our team.”
Mehrzad will look to lead his team to their eighth triumph – Iran have won seven of the nine tournaments since their first attempt in Seoul in 1988.
The Paralympic Games began in Paris on August 28 and will run until September 8.
The United States currently has 11 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 10 bronze medals.
