India secured its fifth medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday, 8 August, with Neeraj Chopra claiming silver in the men’s javelin throw final. A few hours before Chopra’s win, the Indian Men’s field hockey team added to the nation’s success at the tournament by winning a bronze medal, marking their second consecutive bronze at the Olympics. Earlier, India had already won three bronze medals in shooting, with two coming from Manu Bhaker and one from Swapnil Kusale.
India still has a few opportunities to expand its medal tally through the rest of the Games, with Indian athletes set to compete in wrestling and the 4x400m relay on 9 August.
Paris Olympics 2024: From Aman Sehrawat’s bid for the bronze to relay races, check out India’s schedule for the tournament’s remaining fixtures
Wrestling — Aman Sehrawat — starts at 9.45 PM IST
After Vinesh Phogat’s heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024, 21-year-old Aman Sehrawat will be looking to win India’s first wrestling medal in this ongoing edition of the Olympic games. He will be seen in action in the men’s 57kg category against Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match, scheduled for 9:45 PM IST on 9 August. Aman Sehrawat’s semifinal is seventh in the order of the bouts, so it’s likely to take place around 11 PM IST.
Sehrawat started strong on Thursday, 8 August, winning his first two bouts with impressive performances. However, he was defeated in the semifinal by Japan’s Rei Higuchi. Considering his young age, Sehrawat has already made significant strides in his sports career, winning a gold medal at the 2022 U23 World Championships and becoming the Asia champion in 2023. He qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 by competing at the World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul.
