As part of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme, more than 90,800 internship opportunities have been posted by 193 companies across India. The scheme, announced in the Union Budget 2024, aims to provide internships to 1.25 lakh candidates this financial year and ultimately cover 1 crore individuals in five years. Leading companies like Reliance Industries, Jubilant Foodworks and Maruti Suzuki India are among those offering internships. The program is designed to create valuable career opportunities for young adults aged 21-24.
Diverse opportunities in 24 sectors
Internships under the scheme are available in 24 sectors including oil, gas, energy, automotive and banking and financial services. Other key areas include travel and hospitality, operations management, production, sales and marketing. The internship will take place in 737 districts, ensuring wide coverage across 36 states and union territories. This wide geographical expansion aims to reach out to aspiring professionals in both rural and urban areas of the country.
Financial assistance for trainees
Trainees selected under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme will receive financial assistance of Rs 5,000 per month for a period of 12 months. Additionally, they will also be given a one-time grant of Rs 6,000. The purpose of this financial assistance is to ease the burden on trainees as they gain valuable work experience in their chosen fields. The pilot phase of the program is estimated to cost approximately Rs 800 crore, reflecting a significant investment by the government in youth employment and skill development.
