Polls show Senator Sherrod Brown is the latest blow to Ohio Democrats: ‘It’s bad’

Columbus, Ohio – A powerful democrat In an increasingly red situation, Senator Sherrod Brown is on Ohio’s endangered species list. And two new polls show Brown trailing his GOP opponent for the first time this cycle, which could mean he’s in more danger than expected.

activevote The poll, which surveyed 400 likely voters between August 16 and September 22, shows Brown’s Republican challenger, businessman Bernie Moreno, ahead by 2.2 points, 51.1% to 48.9%.

second pole comes RMG ResearchWhich surveyed 781 potential voters from 18 to 20 September. Moreno is ahead by 2 points in this poll as well, 48% to Brown’s 46%.

Both polls show the race within their margins of error, +/- 4.9 points in the ActiveVote poll and 3.5 points in the RMG.

This Ohio Senate race has been called a toss-up from the beginning, but Brown has maintained a 3 to 5 point lead in pre-polls based on this data. The RealClearPolitics polling average gives Brown a 3.8-point advantage.

“This is bad,” the Ohio Democratic Party said in a campaign fundraising email shortly after the polling was released. “We cannot let Bernie Moreno gain any more lead – not if we want to keep the Senate blue.”

Analysts say Moreno’s lead is likely to be diminished by three key factors:

  • Donald Trump: Trump’s lead over Kamala Harris is widening in Ohio, 50% to 44%, according to the RCP average, making Moreno likely to receive fewer votes than the former president.
  • inflation: Moreno’s message focused on job creation, tax cuts and wage increases for Ohio workers. the economy is number 1 issue for Ohio voters, and Moreno is making Brown the face of inflation in the state.
  • Immigration: Even before Springfield made national headlines, immigration was one of the top three issues for Ohioans. Moreno has passed immigration reform A cornerstone of his campaign by supporting Trump’s mass-deportation plans.

Brown’s defeat would be another major blow to Ohio’s swing-state status, which has been in question for years as the state increasingly elects Republicans at the state and federal levels.

The GOP controls all three branches of state government, as well as the offices of Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Treasurer.

Brown’s historically solid polling numbers and Ohio’s recent willingness to pass left-leaning ballot measures like marijuana legalization gave Dems some hope that the state has not been completely lost to the GOP, but for Moreno it The good news is another blow to the blue party.

“Sherrod Brown sold out his working-class base to toe the Democrat Party line,” said Philip Letsou, a spokesman for the House Republicans’ campaign arm.

“He is voting along with Chuck Schumer and Kamala Harris for open borders, higher taxes, and anti-labor green energy policies. Now, after Brown’s more than 50 years in politics, Ohio voters are ready to send him home.

Both the Moreno and Brown campaigns declined to comment for this story.
