A pro-Israel PAC is torching the Democratic Socialists of America and liberal Queens candidates for destroying the Democratic Party – and America – with a scathing six-figure ad campaign.
The Comittee for Sensible Government’s first ad in a series takes aim at Democratic primary candidates running for state Assembly including veteran incumbent Ron Kim.
“This is what the DSA stands for: Disarm, defund, abolish the police,” a narrator declares in the 30-second spot says with images of a protest.
“Making New York City the migrant center of America and now some violent conflict and chaos at campuses across America,” the narrator adds, as videos show vandals smashing windows and protesters grappling with police and campus security officers.
The narrator claims the DSA is trying to take over the party of “FDR and JFK.”
“Now that you know what they stand for, there’s only one question – will you take a stand?” the ad says.
The group – whose donors include the Real Estate Board of New York and Rent Stabilization Association representing landlords of rent-regulated apartments – is targeting candidates who are endorsed by DSA or other left-leaning candidates.
The group’s president, Michael Nussbaum, who also heads the Queens Jewish Community Council, said support for Israel is a “line in the sand” for him.
“The DSA is against Israel. The far left is as dangerous as the far right,” Nussbaum said.
But the political action committee also is slamming candidates for being soft on crime.
Assemblyman Kim, who has represented the Flushing-Bayside area in the 40th District since 2012 and is seeking a seventh term, faces a formidable challenge from Yi Andy Chen in the June 25 Democratic primary.
Nussbaum’s group – which backs Chen – slams Kim for supporting the controversial cashless bail law and a pitch to decriminalize prostitution, among other things.
Kim’s campaign slammed the PAC as sleazy.
“Michael Nussbaum’s group, which includes former Council Member Dennis Gallagher who was indicted for rape, and has a record of supporting criminals for office, including a former Assembly candidate who went to jail for assault, has been spreading lies trying to mislead voters,” a Kim campaign spokesman told The Post.
“Nussbaum and those around him have been on a weird personal crusade against Assembly Member Kim for years, bordering on obsession. We ask how it is appropriate for Michael Nussbaum, the publisher of a newspaper, to be openly engaged in political attacks of the worst kind.
The spokesperson also called Kim’s primary opponent “George Santos Version 2.0,” a reference to the serial liar Republican who was booted from Congress after a series of controversies.
Nussbaum’s PAC is also putting its thumb on the scale in two other Queens Assembly primary races – backing Larinda Hooks over former Councilman Hiram Monserrate in the 35th Assembly District and supporting Johana Carmona in the 37th AD over DSA-backed Claire Valdez and embattled incumbent Assemblyman Juan Ardila, who’s grappled with sexual assault claims.
He said the DSA has gotten a foothold in Western Queens, with the election of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Assemblyman Zhoran Mamdani, Assemblywoman Jessica Rojas Gonzalez and Councilwoman Tiffany Caban.
