Recently a unique item worth thousands of rupees was found at the bottom of a toffee box.
Wootton Auction Rooms, an auction house based in Gloucestershire, England, recently came across an old coin while evaluating items from a private seller.
Auctioneer Joseph Trinder said the coin is a Continental dollar, measuring 38mm in diameter and made of brass, minted in 1776, according to SWNS.
Trinder also said, “This coin represents a find that ranks among the top five finds of my career so far, and is something that every auctioneer across the country hopes to discover.”
According to SWNS' report, the coin had a limited production run, with only 6,000 coins ever made — and only about 100 survive today.
Given its rarity, the coin was taken back to the United States for authentication by the Numismatic Guaranty Company in Sarasota, Florida – and it was confirmed as genuine.
“It was examined by a panel of experts, X-rays were taken and other scientific tests were carried out, and we were delighted to receive information a few days ago that it was genuine,” Trinder told SWNS.
He added: “It is a mistake to think that this coin is from the 1950s.” [America’s] Freedom, and to find it in Britain, is unique.”
Trinder said the auction house had no confirmed records of any other examples of the coin found in Britain.
The SWNS said the coin was found in a box containing small items such as jewellery, carved stones and fossils.
“We investigated very thoroughly and made sure we got to the bottom of everything that was inside,” he said.
He added: “There were some very interesting items in there, like gold coins and some other valuable items – but at the bottom of this treasure chest we found this amazing continental dollar coin.”
The coin will be put up for sale at Wotton Auction Rooms on October 3.
