New Yorkers including former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly are starting a new bipartisan reform group called “Save Our City” to help confront the issues facing the Big Apple ahead of the 2025 mayoral and City Council elections.
The former lieutenant is also among the co-founders and organizers of “Common Sense,” the center-right committee. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, Jr., restaurateur Alan Rosen and former U.S. Attorney Mike Mukasey, among other notables.
“New York City is in crisis,” said Kelly, the city’s longest-serving NYPD commissioner. “‘Save Our City’ can help get it back on track with some of the best minds I know.”
McCaughey, who served as then-Republican Gov. George Pataki’s first lieutenant governor in the 1990s, said: “New Yorkers don’t want ideology. They want safe metro travel home, good schools and order instead of chaos.”
The 501c3 tax-exempt education advocacy group says it will engage New Yorkers on the following issues:
- Preventing the exodus of businesses, tenants and taxpayers from the city.
- Preventing crime, reinstating bail requirements, and improving safety on streets and subways.
- Restoring civil order.
- Protecting city services without raising taxes.
- Allowing local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
- Protecting New York’s Jewish Community from Anti-Semitism.
He said, increasing the voting percentage is a major goal.
Only 12.8% of registered voters showed up in last year’s council elections, while only 23% turned out in the 2021 general election for mayor and other citywide offices.
“We must unite New Yorkers to save our city. This is a vehicle for New Yorkers to take their city back,” McCaughey said.
“We can’t let the city collapse.”
McCaughey said the group wants to hear from New Yorkers about their concerns through its website saveourcityny.org.
“This is not a progressive coalition, this is a common sense coalition,” McCaughey told The Post when asked about the membership.
The group is formed after a few weeks Mayor Eric Adams A federal criminal indictment was filed for crimes of bribery, campaign finance, and conspiracy involving foreign interests.
Adams has denied wrongdoing and has insisted he will run for re-election.
If Adams resigns to fill the vacancy, a non-partisan special election will be held to fill the vacancy.
The Save Our City website says, “City leadership tries to present an optimistic picture. But New Yorkers are smart. We know we are in trouble.
“We see it every day on the streets, on the subways. We see empty shops, crime on the streets and in the metro. Schools that are failing our children. Taxpayers are leaving the state. We hear about budget deficits and billions of dollars of unexpected costs for newcomer support and housing. We connect the dots…we know there are tough choices ahead. “We want to be part of the solution.”
