Former collegiate swimmer Riley Goins criticizes Scripps National Spelling Bee Including alternative spellings of the word “woman” She claims it promotes “contrived issues” of gender politics.
Anti-trans podcast hosts are outraged after an approved list of study words for a third-grade competition was released Thursday, revealing it would only accept “women” as an alternative spelling to “woman.”
“How lucky we are to live in the United States, where the spelling of women, never mind the definition, has become a national debate,” Gaines said during a speech. Thursday appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity.”
“These are fabricated issues that have been created by people who believe they are marginalized or oppressed – who I believe, quite frankly, want to be oppressed, while, in fact, ( They) live in the greatest nation in the whole world. So a completely manufactured outrage.”
Gaines – who became famous after publicly criticizing her Colleague, trans athlete Lia Thomas – Claimed that the alternative accepted spelling was indicative of a national issue in the country.
He pointed to the 2023 Budweiser and Dylan Mulvaney fiasco, before mentioning trans influencer “a guy they dressed up as Audrey Hepburn.”
“Imagine a kid finding the word ‘woman’ and asking for its definition,” Gaines said of the spelling bee.
“It will be a beautiful full circle moment because people who have next to no common sense haven’t been able to answer that question for years.”
The Scripps National Spelling Bee stated, however, that including the word was not nefarious.
All words used in the annual competition are taken from Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary, which lists alternative spellings for women that are used “in some feminist contexts.”
Oxford Dictionary The word womin is also listed as a variant of the word woman – “replacing ‑men with ‑myn to avoid association with the plural of male.”
“During the contest, our policy is to accept any correct spelling listed in our official dictionary that is not marked as archaic or obsolete. A spokesperson for Scripps said, the alternative spelling ‘womin’ is included in our study list because it is listed as an alternative spelling for ‘women’ in Merriam-Webster.
“In creating our study lists, our goal is to include alternative spellings for all words that have them listed in Merriam-Webster. The Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary is the final authority and sole source for the spelling of all words entered in the contest,” the statement continued.
