Ruby Vergara’s family, the freshman who was shot Earlier this week, the teenager surprisingly expressed forgiveness for her killer at the teen’s funeral on Saturday at Abundant Life Christian School, where hundreds joined in her mourning.
“We hold no bitterness or unkindness toward 15-year-old Natalie Roopnov and her family. They also lost a daughter,” Vergara’s uncle Andy Remus told the crowd.
“Somehow, this precious child of God lost his way.”
Remus said the family refused to dwell on the tragedy, choosing instead to remember the 14-year-old’s joyful demeanor and positive outlook.
“We just need to breathe. We love to laugh at any point in the service, if something funny is said about the memory of Ruby laughing… If this is truly a celebration of life, let’s do it right,” Vergara’s uncle. Andy Remus said at the top of the service.
“We need to get out of this fog that we’ve been in for the last five days.”
The funeral was held at the City Church, which is located next to the school. Fellow student Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow Monday, opened fire, killing Vergara and substitute teacher Erin West before turning the gun on himself.
Hundreds of people gathered at the large church and hundreds more joined in on the live stream.
“She would probably be horrified to see so many people in the church just for her,” Jane, a longtime friend of the family, told the crowd.
Vergara was remembered as an avid reader and musician, playing keyboards in her family worship band.
Her loved ones said the 14-year-old girl also had a close bond with her pet dog and cat.
