Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has silenced male Hollywood stars and the host of The Graham Norton Show with a powerful sentence.
Ronan appeared as a guest on the latest episode of the British comedy talk show alongside Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington, where protecting yourself from an attack was discussed.
Mescal, who stars in the soon-to-be-released Gladiator II, joked about the idea of using a phone-like object.
“Who’s really going to think about that?” he asked. “If someone really attacked me, I wouldn’t ‘call’.”
As Mescal, Redmayne and Norton laughed, Ronan tried to speak but the joke continued.
“Can you wait a second?” Norton said to an imaginary attacker while patting his pockets in search of a phone.
Pretending to hold the phone to his ear, Mescal said: “Excuse me, Mom, just a second. Collide.”
“It’s a great thing,” Redmayne agreed.
But Ronan wanted to show that for half the population such views are no joke.
“Girls have to think about this all the time,” she said.
As people realized this the mood immediately changed and they appeared unsure how to react.
“Am I right ladies?” Ronan asked the audience to applaud heavily.
Ronan and Mescal are known to be good friends after working together on the 2023 film Foe, which was directed by Australian director Garth Davis.
Ronan, who starred as outspoken and independent Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, has been celebrated online with posts of the clip receiving millions of views on social media.
“This is her Joe March,” one fan wrote.
Another said, “Silence…speaks for itself.”
A third wrote, “The silence after she spoke is truly a work of art.”
“Silence afterward oh my god. Thank you Saoirse,” praised a fourth.
Other social media users pointed to the fact that Ronan had tried to speak out earlier but was talked over.
One said, “Notice how she tried to make her point before they all started talking, but they all started talking over her, so she waited.”
“The way she started to say something but then they all started talking over her and making jokes, and you can see the moment when she really decides NAH,” said another.
Many women said the conversation was evidence of how much energy it takes for women to protect themselves in environments and situations that men don’t even think twice about.
One woman wrote, “I love Paul but there’s something about how men don’t understand how difficult it is to live safely as a woman.”
“Guys… you know we walk around at night with our house keys between our index fingers in case we want to escape from an attacker, right?” asked another.
“I mean it’s not even about how stupid men are, the point is that they are obviously privileged and they are not always aware of it. She was great for being so honest and candid,” someone else wrote.
