Hair loss has long been a concern for many men, but with the rise of hair transplants, addressing thinning hair has become more common and less taboo.
One TikToker recently sparked debate when she called them “BBLs for straight men,” meaning they can be a discreet procedure that can boost confidence with minimal downtime, like a Brazilian butt lift.
content creator @georgiejxmes It was claimed that the increase in male hair transplants was largely influenced by celebrity culture and changing attitudes towards cosmetic enhancements for men.
Speaking to news.com.au, hair transplant surgeon and Hair Doctors owner Dr Osman Ashraf confirmed the trend within the industry.
“There has definitely been an increase,” he said. “More men are prioritizing self-care and grooming and being proactive about dealing with hair loss, which is fantastic. In the past, many people were in favor of hair thinning, but now there is real awareness that solutions exist and are achievable.”
Many men are attracted to hair transplant procedures because of their professional and social benefits.
“They believe that looking their best has a direct impact on their experience at work and in their social lives,” explained Dr. Ozman, who goes by Dr. Oz online.
Social media has also played an important role in this trend, as people can now see changes in real time and read first-hand descriptions of what is possible, helping to reduce the mystery surrounding the process.
Who is getting hair transplant done and how much does it cost?
The usual age range for male hair transplants is wide, with most patients being between 25 and 50.
Younger men often seek treatment because they are experiencing early hair loss and want intervention before it progresses, while older men are trying to reverse hair loss that has accumulated over the years.
Typically, hair transplants cost between $6,000 and $15,000, depending on the extent of the procedure and the number of grafts required.
Additional services, such as follow-up treatments for healing and growth support, are usually included in that price.
People’s main concerns are
Dr. Oz’s main concerns often revolve around ensuring natural results, how thick the hair will look, and, of course, the longevity of the results.
“Many patients also worry about the scar, or whether it will be obvious that they’ve had work done,” he said.
“Our most common procedure is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which is minimally invasive, does not leave a linear scar, and offers short recovery time.
“This allows us to harvest individual follicles and place them exactly where they are needed.” This approach not only creates a natural hairline but also ensures that the results will stand the test of time.
How long does the process take and what is involved?
An FUE procedure typically takes six to eight hours, Dr. Oz said.
“We begin by carefully planning the hairline to match the patient’s facial structure and density preferences, ensuring we are aligned with their goals. During the procedure, we use local anesthesia, so patients remain awake and comfortable,” he explained.
“We then extract individual hair follicles from the donor area, usually the back of the scalp, and transplant them into thinned areas. The entire process is precise and optimized, and patients go home the same day.”
In terms of recovery, it is usually relatively quick and many people resume regular activities within a few days.
The transplanted hair begins to grow naturally over the following months.
celebrity inspiration
Celebrity photos are a popular choice for inspiration, with David Beckham and Chris Hemsworth being two of the top requests Dr. Oz receives.
“These examples are helpful in understanding the patient’s aesthetic goals. However, I always emphasize that the best results are those that are tailored to the individual – taking into account their own natural hairline, facial structure and existing hair density around the implant area.
“The goal is to accentuate each person’s unique look rather than creating a one-size-fits-all result.”
TikToker’s hair transplant theory
TikToker @georgiejxme’s video, titled “Hair transplants are like BBL for straight men: cheat codes for hotness,” theorizes that many celebrities resort to secret hair transplants for their good looks.
He claimed, “The main reason that celebrity men look so much better than the normal men we see in real life is because they regularly undergo hair transplants.”
Take Harry Styles, for example. At the age of 16, you can see his real hairline. It’s quite low, and his hair is extremely thick, so that’s the baseline. Then, just a few years later at age 20, you may notice that her hairline has actually gone back to the corner.
“At this point it’s not that noticeable, but then at 25 years old in 2019, you can see it’s gone way back. Hair fall is increasing.
“And then in 2023, she got her hair done, and I knew right away that a hair transplant was going to happen. This year, 2024, we can see that the corners of his hairline have moved forward. The person who did the transplant didn’t make the mistake of trying to give her back her original hairline. “They moved it just a little bit to make a difference, but not big enough to make a noticeable difference.”
His in-depth analysis included other celebrities such as Prince Harry and Justin Bieber, who he also believes have had the surgery.
People rushed to the comments to share their thoughts on her theory.
“I had no idea!” One expressed. “This video was life changing,” someone else admitted.
“So, I’m not ugly, I’m just broken,” someone else laughed.
But someone claimed that “comparing hair to BBL is crazy.”
A different user argued, “This is nothing like BBL…”. “BBL is one of the most dangerous procedures.”
Others aimed to normalize hair transplants and said it was great that more men were taking control of their appearance.
“I like it, it’s good for them. More men should get them if they can afford them rather than feeling miserable and insecure,” one said.
“I completely agree! It is really very difficult to lose your hair and if it can be stopped, then why not?” The original creator replied.
Someone else concluded: “Men are entitled to have aesthetic procedures to feel more confident if they want.”
