Shark sightings shut down NYC beach as drone video shows predators lurking below surface

We’re gonna need a bigger beach.

Two separate shark sightings off the Rockaways temporarily shut down miles of city beaches to swimmers on Thursday, officials said.

The first shark was confirmed off Beach 86th Street around 1:20 p.m, according to a New York City Department of Parks and Recreation spokesperson.

The beach was closed to swimmers for a mile in each direction, from Beach 64 to Beach 104th Street, and opened one hour later per department protocol.

The NYPD released drone footage of the shark lurking in the shallow, murky waters just beyond the surf break off the beach.

At some points, only its ominous dorsal fin can be seen, video shows.

Another shark was spotted swimming off of Beach 61st Street around 2:45 p.m., NYC Parks said.

The sighting, which was also filmed swimming by an NYPD drone, again prompted beaches to close to swimming from Beach 57 to Beach 81st Street,

Miles of beach were closed to swimmers until the coast was deemed clear.

Those beaches also reopened an hour later.

The sightings come as beachgoers flocked to the ocean to beat the city heat. Temperatures reached 89 degrees — and felt like 92 degrees — on Thursday, according to Fox Weather.

No injuries were reported and NYPD said it will continue to monitor the waters for sharks or for swimmers in distress.

“Our goal is to keep the public safe and with new and improving drone technology we are able to do that,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said.
