Cher said that their marriage was “arranged within days.” The artist told two of his friends and they accompanied the couple to Las Vegas for a ceremony that was “over in minutes”. Cher and Allman, who died in 2017 at age 69, posed for photos and then “went straight back home.”
She wrote, “I was no longer Cher Bono but Cher Allman, Gregory’s third wife.” “There was nothing romantic about our wedding day. There will be no honeymoon.”
Cher also revealed in the book, published on Tuesday, that the two faced struggles during their marriage.
She recalled the time she looked in the singer’s dope kit and reportedly found “a plastic bag full of white powder”. Despite standing by Allman’s side during his addiction struggles, Cher got to substance abuse breaking point as she was expecting her first child.
Cher, who was already the mother of Chase with ex Sonny Bono, was then told by several friends that Allman planned to divorce her.
When she confronted Allman he “lied and denied.” The next day, Cher filed for divorce.
Allman went to rehab as Cher turned to Bono for support as the pair remained friends after their separation. When Allman asked Cher to visit him in rehab, Bono encouraged him to do so. During her stay, Cher joined the musician for a therapy session where she spoke candidly about “the pressure of becoming Mr. Cher”.
Cher and Allman reconciled and went on a “delayed honeymoon” in Jamaica. However Starr left the trip early after claiming that he had seen Allman drinking rum.

Shortly after, Cher learned that Allman was also addicted to heroin and gave him an ultimatum to go back into rehab before their baby arrived.
“I don’t remember exactly which date I chose. It was somewhat arbitrary,” she shared in her memoir. “It occurred to me that we were repeating the same patterns over and over again, and I told him on the phone, ‘I’m so tired of doing this, Gregory. I’m so tired of going to rehab with you. ‘ He was quiet on the other end of the line. ‘But I keep going,’ he said softly, trying to get past the rehab. Despite failing, I kept trying. In that moment, instead of thinking about my exhaustion, I sympathized with him.
Their son, Elijah, was born in July 1976. Allman began his addictive behavior shortly thereafter, which Cher did not want around her child.
“There came a point shortly thereafter when Gregory had a mental breakdown one night and insisted that he had seen people with guns in the backyard. I thought, ‘This is the last straw,’ the actress alleged. “Whatever it is now, it is not safe for children. “It only happened once, but I couldn’t risk it.”
