Why is it that people enjoy debating over where they store certain food items in their homes? If it’s not the tomato sauce, it’s the butter, and if it’s not the, it’s the jam. And if it’s not the jam, it’s the chocolate…
Well, now a new item has been added to the list and this time it’s bread.
Where should bread be stored?
Known as the “King of bread”, Paul Hollywood from The Great British Bake Off is often asked where the best place is to store bread at home.
“A big question I get asked a lot, ‘Where do you store bread?’,” he admits in a video uploaded on TikTok.
And he took the time to finally settle the debate that leaves so many people divided.
“If you put your bread in the fridge, it will stale three times quicker because you’re drawing all of the moisture out of the loaf,” he explains.
With that being said, Paul says he stores his bread on the kitchen bench.
“I just put it in a brown bag and leave it on the side!” he shares.
But what about the mold?
Despite the professional baker’s answer, many were still unable to agree.
“I say you’re wrong,” one person simply commented.
And many others agreed because they found their bread actually stayed fresher longer when stored in the fridge.
“I keep mine in a sealed bag in the fridge – it keeps much better in rather than out,” someone shared.
“We keep our bread in the fridge it lasts so much longer,” another chimed in.
And it wasn’t just the freshness that they were considering. The likelihood of mold growing faster when stored outside the fridge also played a part in their decision-making.
“It seems to mold quickly when I leave it out,” someone argued.
“I’d rather it be stale than moldy,” another insisted.
Where do you keep your bread?
As for the Kidspot team, it seems we all have a different method of storing the everyday food item – and all have valid points.
Carly was all for the fridge method because of the mold factor mentioned above.
Mom-of-three Jordana said she uses the microwave as a bread box in her place: “It’s airtight and fresh. That’s what my mom did, so I do the same.”
Joel and Laura said their bread is stored both in the fridge AND on the kitchen bench depending on what they’re making.
“One loaf on the kitchen bench near the toaster, one loaf in the freezer,” Joel explained further.
“One loaf in the freezer for toast – one on the kitchen bench for sandwiches,” Laura clarified.
As for our kitchen editor, Liz, it was neither the fridge or on the bench, but rather in the pantry stored away.
“I keep my bread in the pantry – cool and dry shelf by itself. The only thing I do tend to pop in the fridge is crumpets, cause they always seem to go off a day after I buy them and its the only way to make them last!”
Well, there you go. The debate continues I guess…
