Live from LA – It's Sunday night!
Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Bowen Yang and Seth Meyers brought a lot of laughs to the crowd when they took the stage at the 76th Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theatre on Sunday night.
The comedians honored the long-running NBC comedy sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” which will enter its fifth decade on Sept. 28.
“We've heard some things behind the scenes that need to be looked at,” Rudolph said.
“Now later,” said Wiig, 51. “We heard that our dear friend, our mentor, Lorne Michaels, was nominated for an Emmy 85 times and he lost. He never won.”
“Never won. 85 times! That's totally wrong, and we would like to take this opportunity to say a few words to him,” Yang, 33, said.
“Lorne, look at me,” Vig told Michaels, 79. “It's really hard to see if he's looking at me or not. You have value, you're worthy, and you're not a loser and you never have been, even though you've lost a lot.”
Rudolph echoed his former co-star's sentiments, saying, “Lorne, look at me now, real quick. Look at me and look at my mouth.
He further said, “Each one of these 85 times you lost, you got robbed, did you hear? You got robbed.”
Yang said, “Lorne, look at me, see, it's getting better. Just because “SNL” didn't work out doesn't mean your next idea won't work. Keep dreaming.”
But Meyers remembers something else. “Guys, this is great, but Lorne won 21 Emmys and 'SNL' has won over 200 awards,” Meyers, 50, said.
“That's too much,” Wiig quipped.
“I can't believe you're complaining about this, Lorne,” Rudolph said, “not to be rude, but be sensible.”
It was a big night for Wiig and Rudolph, who were both known for their comedic talents.
Both besties received nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for their respective work in “Booty” and “Pam Royale.”
Wiig was also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for hosting the April 6 episode of “Saturday Night Live.”
Wiig's appearance on SNL with musical guest Ray earned him inclusion in the show's Five-Timers Club.
Rudolph also won the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category for her return to 30 Rock. The “Bridesmaids” star hosted the Mother's Day episode in May of this year and performed a funny musical monologue.
Rudolph received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the opening track “I Am Your Mother”.
The “Grown Ups” actress was a cast member of “SNL” between 2000 and 2007, while Wiig was on the show from 2005 to 2012.
Meanwhile, Rudolph was also recognized once again in Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for her work as the Hormone Monstress in the animated series “Big Mouth.”
Wiig has earned 11 Emmy nominations throughout her career but has yet to win, while Rudolph, who has been nominated 15 times, has won five Emmys for her work on “SNL” and “Big Mouth.”
In December 2023, the pair joined former “SNL” star and then-host Kate McKinnon in a holiday-themed sketch as Swedish band ABBA. “We were just walking,” Wiig joked, before the trio ended McKinnon’s monologue by linking arms and singing “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”
Since leaving the late-night sketch show, Rudolph and Wiig have starred in several films together, including 2011’s “Friends with Kids” and the Oscar-nominated comedy “Bridesmaids.”
Iconic pairing Reunited at the 2020 Academy Awards Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh will receive the award for best production design for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Despite their onscreen chemistry, Wiig said in March that a “Bridesmaids” sequel probably isn’t possible.
“It was never discussed,” he told the Hollywood Reporter“That story ended, and it’s very dear to me for 10 million reasons, and I think it’s okay for it to exist in the world as it is.”
