Winter weather warnings were issued for parts of New York state on Thursday as the region prepares to be slammed by a powerful winter storm before millions of Americans hit the streets for Thanksgiving.
Forecasters say up to eight inches of snow could fall in some parts of the state, while other areas are expected to get much-needed rain.
“There will be snow across much of Pennsylvania and parts of central New York state. “There will be heavy, wet snow throughout Thursday,” Fox Forecast Center meteorologist Greg Diamond told The Post.
Rainfall is expected across the tri-state area through at least Friday night, possibly into the weekend, Diamond said.
Areas where snow is expected, including parts of northeastern Pennsylvania and south-central New York state, near Binghamton and the Catskills, could see up to eight inches of white rain.
Northern New Jersey, especially in Area near Jennings Creek FireThere may also be dust, Diamond said.
While snow will only continue to fall overnight, New York City can’t expect to be covered in white — at least not yet.
“In eastern New England and New York City, it is raining mostly. A beneficial rain that will eliminate the fire danger,” Diamond said. “That won’t end our drought here, we need at least 10 inches of rain for that to happen. But this will end the fire problem we have been facing for the last few weeks.”
While the weekend is likely to be clear, rain early next week could impact travel plans.
By Thanksgiving next week, another storm could hit, Diamond warned, adding, “A storm system may develop across the country, but it still remains quite uncertain at this time.”
Impact on travel this Thursday
While Thanksgiving travel will peak next week, those who decided to head out early for their holiday celebrations may be in trouble due to inclement weather.
Around 1 p.m., high winds at Newark Liberty International Airport were causing incoming flights to be delayed by up to 45 minutes. According to FlightAware.
John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport were not affected.
A record-breaking 80 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving holiday, According to AAA.
This is an increase of 1.7 million people from the previous year and 2 million more than 2019.
