Blue Eye Samurai is one of the best animated series in a long while, and while everyone was escatatic to see it renewed for season 2, meaning it will not end on a cliffhanger, new information about that season on Netflix is pretty disappointing.
There are actually two bits of bad news here:
At a new roundtable with Collider, the team behind the series said it is their “fondest hope” to have the series return in 2026, and they seem somewhat scared about where they are in the process right now:
“We’re in panic mode right now because we still have a schedule and we still have a budget, and we’re trying to get all that to talk to each other. We’re in the beginnings of production and getting it started, and everything else is in the planning stages.”
Reportedly it took 3.5 years from starting the show to getting it actually on Netflix, and also the length of the episodes means it takes longer than most animated series. See the very stretched out schedule for Invincible, too.
But that the other bit of bad news, the series, when it does arrive, is also going to be shorter than the first, one of Netflix’s signature cutbacks when renewing series a lot of the time. Season 1 had eight episodes ranging from 35 to 65 minutes, most around 46-47. Season 2 will have only six episodes, all around the 44 minute mark. If that’s true, that’s probably close to two hours less than season 1’s run time.
So, that all adds up to the fact that if they “hope” that season 2 will make it out in 2026, that would likely be toward the end of the year, if it doesn’t get pushed to 2027. And with season out in November of 2023, that’s a full three years at least until season 2. And if they get a season 3 to end the series like they’ve stated they want, probably another three years after that. We may not see the conclusion of this story until 2030, a frustrating byproduct of just how long many shows take to make now.
Regardless, it’s great that we’re getting a season 2 at all, given Netflix’s propensity to cancel lots of things. But it’s going to be ages until we can actually see it.
