John Richardson, headteacher of Strood Academy, said his haircut policy aimed to bring “equity and focus”.
But 15-year-old Liam’s parents are amazed that such action has been caused by a simple “fade” – which he wears to cool his head so his eczema can calm down.
“No extreme haircuts”
School policy states: “No extreme haircuts. For example: skin fade, graphics, lines and must have a minimum grade one cut (discretion of the senior leadership team).
Liam’s stepfather Barry Sandman said punishing Liam is “unnecessary and terrible”.
Sandman explained that Liam’s hairstyle was a way to cool his neck as his severe eczema worsens when it gets too hot.
According to reports, Liam got his hair cut on September 21 and it went unnoticed until September 25, when the school decided to give him detention.
His mother went inside to take him home, so Liam spent a day studying, then later went to the doctor, where he received a letter confirming his skin condition.
She was not allowed back to school until September 30, after her hair had grown out sufficiently.
“That’s a sensible haircut.”
Speaking to SWNS, Liam’s stepfather said the incident should not have happened.
“Something needs to change because Liam should not be missing teaching time in his final year of GCSEs over a smart looking haircut. It’s not like he has a mohawk, massive long ponytail or blue dyed hair.
“It’s a sensible haircut.”
Head teacher John Richardson said in a statement:
“Strood Academy is committed to maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment where high standards of behavior and attendance are upheld.
“The Academy has a clear and well-established dress code, including guidelines on appropriate hairstyles, which is communicated to parents and students at the beginning of each academic year.
“We are aware of concerns raised by parents in relation to a pupil who was placed in the academy’s behavior unit following concerns over the length of his haircut, which did not meet the academy’s uniform policy.”
The statement concluded by confirming that they are working with the student and his parents.
