In a major boost to tourism and economy of Lakshadweep, Tata Group’s hospitality arm Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has announced plans to develop two Taj-branded island resorts in the picturesque islands of Suheli and Kadmat. The luxury resorts, slated to open in 2026, will position Lakshadweep as a prime beach and eco-tourism destination.
“We see significant potential in Lakshadweep, with its pristine beaches and coral reefs set amongst the Arabian Sea,” said IHCL MD and CEO Puneet Chhatwal, noting the resorts will attract both domestic and international tourists.
World-Class Beachfront Taj Resorts
The luxury beachfront Taj Suheli resort will feature 110 rooms, with 60 beach villas and 50 water villas overwater on the sea. The Taj Kadmat will be similar in size, offering 110 rooms including 75 beach villas and 35 water villas.
The resorts will provide a world-class hospitality experience synonymous with the Taj brand, amidst the idyllic setting of Lakshadweep’s swaying coconut groves, sparkling lagoons and coral reefs. Guests can expect finest dining, rejuvenating spas and water activities like snorkelling, sailing and scuba diving.
Promoting Tourism in Lakshadweep
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep has put the spotlight on promoting tourism in India’s smallest union territory. Known for its postcard-perfect islands, virgin beaches, rich marine life and year-round tropical climate, Lakshadweep has immense yet untapped potential for tourism.
The Taj resorts will provide a major boost to travel and hospitality infrastructure here. IHCL aims to replicate its pioneering success in establishing other destinations like Rajasthan, Kerala and Goa on the global tourism map. Its foray into Lakshadweep, which PM Modi termed “full of possibilities”, also comes amid strained ties between India and the Maldives.
With sustainable design, community involvement and showcasing local culture, the Taj luxury resorts will bring significant economic opportunities for islanders while preserving the fragile ecosystem – transforming both lives and landscapes.
