Taylor Swift’s ‘August’ Is A Hit Once Again–And It’s Return Is A Little Late

Every year since its release in 2020, Taylor Swift’s song “August” has mounted something of a comeback. The fan-favorite tune is constantly racking up streams throughout the year, but it becomes especially popular when July turns to August, as the changing of the month gives Swifties another reason to consume the cut in large numbers.

“August” is a hit once again in the U.K., as it reappears on several charts at once. It’s not surprising that the tune is back on the tallies; what is a bit unexpected is how long it took for the cut to break back onto the weekly rankings.

Between the two charts where “August” reappears in the U.K. this week, it sits highest on the Official Singles Downloads tally. On that list, Swift’s track re-emerges at No. 83.

The same title is performing almost as well on the slightly more all-encompassing Official Singles Sales chart. Swift breaks back in at No. 87 with “August” on the ranking of the bestselling tracks in the country via any format.

Coincidentally, “August” has peaked at No. 69 on both of those purchase-only rankings. The Official Charts Company reports conflicting numbers regarding the length of time that the tune has spent on the rosters, though it seems it’s the same on both, with either just three or possibly 11 turns.

“August” usually rises on sales platforms like iTunes and streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music toward the end of July. Its success typically continues into early August, but after a while, the excitement dwindles, and the tune begins to fall again.

It’s interesting, then, that “August” is only appearing on the U.K. charts more than halfway into the month with which it shares its name. The tune hasn’t been found on either list since last year around the same time when its comeback took place even later.

“August” was never released as a single, but fans have loved it from the moment it arrived nonetheless. The tune is featured on Swift’s album Folklore, which was announced with only a few hours’ warning before it dropped in mid-2020. The song peaked at No. 23 on the Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.
