The California teen is accused of Shooting 49ers rookie wide receiver and first-round pick Ricky Pearsall has been charged with murder in connection with a botched robbery Saturday in San Francisco.
The 17-year-old, who has not yet been identified, has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and attempted robbery, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said Tuesday night.
Jenkins said charges will be filed in juvenile court and the suspect is expected to be arraigned before prosecutors as early as Wednesday afternoon.
“Under California law, a district attorney can no longer choose to file charges against a minor in adult court,” Jenkins said.
“The only mechanism for that is to request a transfer hearing, which requires a judge to rule on the competency of the minor to be transferred to adult court, which essentially means that the juvenile system will not be able to rehabilitate that minor.”
Jenkins said his office would “review the case more closely to determine whether or not we will seek a fitness hearing.”
