In the grand scheme of the streaming industry right now, The Diplomat is going to have a relatively short wait between seasons, it seems. Netflix has just announced The Diplomat season 2’s release date, and it’s sooner than I would have imagined.
The Diplomat season 2’s release date is October 31, 2024, just over two months from now, and immediately ahead of the 2024 presidential election, certainly not an accident given its focus on politics and the ascendancy of Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler.
That date is somewhat sadly impressive given that it’s hitting the 1.5 year mark in between season rather than the 2+ years we are seeing for most larger shows these days, especially a number of high profile ones on Netflix. A combination of actor availability, post-production work and how the writer/actor strike this past year affected it plays into things. Right now, somehow, The Bear on Hulu seems like the only series that manages to do seasons with one-year gaps. through some sort of magic.
As for The Diplomat, it was a successful, well-scored series with an 83% from critics, though less well-received by some audiences with a 53% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m not quite sure what inspired that, but in the context of TV scores, that’s quite low. It did not seem to draw any real measure of controversy when it aired.
Netflix has been looking for hit new political dramas ever since House of Cards wrapped after going off the rails a bit for its final seasons. No, The Diplomat is not that big, but House of Cards was essentially the first big Netflix original, so it’s hard to compare them too much. But The Diplomat is less goofy and flat-out better, I’d argue.
It’s a big win for Keri Russell in the wake of her stunning turn in The Americans, an all-time great spy show that wrapped a few years back. Her co-star in that series, Matthew Rhys, has had a bit less luck as his HBO series Perry Mason was cancelled after two seasons, despite being quite good and him being good in it. But it didn’t find a long term audience and Max has not been known to be too generous with its renewals as of late as it funnels cash into huge projects like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
I am pleased that The Diplomat season 2 is coming soon, and it really is a wide-reaching series that can be enjoyed by all audiences, though I would imagine given its subject matter that is relatively dry, it may skew older. We’ll know more about what’s happening in just over two months.
