Over the years, the Tata Group has played a key role in the industrialization of India, especially with the establishment of Tata Steel in 1907, which is counted among the largest steel producing companies in the world. Under the leadership of Ratan Tata, the group expanded significantly on the global stage by acquiring brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel. Today, the Tata Group, valued at Rs 33 lakh crore, owns around 100 companies in 30 countries.

1. Ratanji Dadabhai Tata Ratanji Dadabhai Tata was a partner in Tata Sons, the company founded by his cousin Jamsetji Tata. He was also the father of the iconic JRD Tata.
Ratanji was born in Navsari in 1856. He received his primary education from The Cathedral and John Connon School, and later studied at Elphinstone College, Bombay. After completing his education, he took agricultural training in Madras and later joined the family business in East Asia.
2. JRD Tata
Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, son of Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and Suzanne Briere, was a renowned industrialist, philanthropist and aviator. He served as Chairman of the Tata Group and earned India’s highest honours, the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat Ratna. JRD Tata played a key role in establishing key Tata group companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Tata Salt and Air India.
JRD Tata was born in France but lived in different countries. He studied in London, Japan, France and India – where he attended the Janson de Celly School in Paris and the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. After serving in the French Army for a year, he wanted to pursue engineering at Cambridge University, but returned to India in 1925 to join the family business.
3. Jamsetji Tata
Born on March 3, 1839 in Navsari, Gujarat, Jamsetji Tata founded the Tata Group. He was the son of priest Nusserwanji Tata, who moved away from his family’s traditional role into business.
Jamsetji Tata graduated from Elphinstone College, Mumbai in 1858, after which he joined his father’s trading firm. With passion and determination, he established his own trading company at the age of 29 and laid the foundation for the Tata Group.
4. Dorabji Tata
Dorabji Tata, born on 27 August 1859, was the first child of Jamsetji Tata. Following his father’s death, he played a key role in shaping and expanding the brand’s legacy.
