Everyone is extremely eager to learn more about Robert Downey Jr’s turn as Doctor Doom in the MCU, with the surprise announcement stunning everyone who assumed a different actor would be cast. Like, literally anyone else.
But we’re also wondering what the villain will actually look like given that in theory, he should be wearing his trademark mask like 95% of the time. For a brief moment, fans freaked out that we did indeed get an official look, as seen above, but no, it’s fake. Well, sort of.
This started with comic book movie YouTuber Supes, often a figure of some controversy, who says he got a package from the Russo brothers, who are directing both upcoming Avengers films. That may be true, but there’s a confusing item in the package, that print of Doctor Doom as seen above and below.
This seems to have even fooled Supes (I think he genuinely thought it was a first look initially, and he later clarified it wasn’t), but it turns out it’s a piece from BossLogic, an artist that has indeed done official art for movies like this before, but this is not the official design for Doom, despite this being spread around quite a bit. It does look pretty cool, I’ll admit, but no, I would not have imagined they would debut the final look through uh, Supes.
There are going to be countless rumors about Doom and his Avengers: Doomsday movie over the next couple years until release. It’s always tough to know what to believe online, though rarely do we see actual art we think might be real. Some insiders have indeed correctly predicted big MCU things. Ahead of Deadpool and Wolverine, I saw Blade, Laura, Elektra and Gambit cameos all listed ahead of time. Others, like Taylor Swift as Dazzler, did not pan out.
For Doomsday, one recent rumor is that Doom will have a much larger role in that film than Kang was going to have in The Kang Dynasty, which seems a bit weird. But I suppose we have to remember that Thanos was only a relatively small part of the last two Avengers movies, even if of course he was the main villain. But Doom may have a lot more screen time, particularly if they’ve paid Downey Jr. an absurd amount of money to be there. I remain confused about the casting, and above that, how often exactly Doom is going to be seen outside his mask, which feels odd, just to make use of Downey’s mug.
The point is, if you see this art floating around out there, it is not official. We likely will not see anything legitimate for a very long time.
