It is the so-called Mount Rushmore of international cuisine.
The best food in the world may seem subjective – one person’s trash is another’s epic treasure. However, travel guide TasteAtlas has delivered a shock by revealing its annual list of the 100 best dishes on Earth for 2024, which includes roast pig, Neapolitan pizza and Brazilian-style beef.
After all, how can one create such a divisive list? TasteAtlas did some culinary crowdsourcing for its countdown “367,847 valid ratings for 11,258 recipes” in their database.
Good news for ardent patriots: the US claims several entries on the list, but sadly our brothers and sisters across the pond in the UK don’t get a place at all.
1. Lecona (Colombia)
As Vinny put it so well in “Goodfellas.” [pork] “That’s the taste.” Pig-Based Treat of the YearThe pick was Licona, according to Taste Atlas, which boasted an impressive 4.78 out of five stars on the site.
The juicy Colombian centerpiece involves “slicing, marinating and layering pork, diced peas and caramelized onions inside the salted skin of a pig” like a crackling meat piñata.
They write, “The skin is tightly sewn to cover the rich filling, then slow-roasted for hours to achieve a golden, crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior.” “Skinning the skin with bitter orange juice during cooking helps the skin develop its characteristic crunch and tartness.”
Their top restaurants for this pigskin pouch of goodness are Leconeria Donde Jimmy (Bogotá), Leconeria Donde & Pacheco (Bogota) and Restaurant Boqueron (Ibagué).
2. Pizza Napoletana (Italy)
The base of the ubiquitous New York-style pie, Second Place Winner Neapolitan Pizza Scored 4.75 out of 5. For those who have been living under a gastronomic rock, the most recognizable version of this minimalist dish involves a thin crust with a tomato-based sauce flavored with garlic and oregano. It’s topped with the holy trinity of tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil leaves, the colors of which represent the Italian flag.
While all the restaurant recommendations in Naples were – perhaps understandably – over, Manhattan’s own Una Pizza Napoletana probably deserves a bigger share of it Pie Given that it was ranked number 1 globally 50 Top Pizzas in June.
3. Picanha (Brazil)
Good beef may seem synonymous with high-class Japanese Wagyu, but TasteAtlas devotees have voted this prime Brazilian spot the best you can eat. high-stakes Competition.
Also known as sirloin cap, pichanha (which has 4.68 stars out of five) is located on the back of the animal, above the butt, where it adorns a veritable glacier of fat. It is a device in churrascarias, where these hunks of meat are grilled and cut with a skewer for serving.
Incidentally, the cut itself is devoid of marbling, so cooks must cook it thoroughly to prevent it from becoming too chewy during a rump roast.
4. Rechta (Algeria)
Coming in fourth place with 4.68 five star is rectaAn Algerian dish of thin, flat noodles and chicken sauce.
“The noodles are made from a combination of flour, salt and water, while the sauce is made from chicken pieces, onion, garlic, oil, chickpeas, cinnamon, turnips, potatoes and zucchini and other ingredients,” writes TasteAtlas. “This dish is especially popular during festivals like weddings, Eid-ul-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Ashura.”
5. Phaneng Curry (Thailand)
was out of the top five faneng curry (4.65 out of 5), surprisingly the only Asian dish to make the top five.
This aromatic oasis in a bowl consists of meat – usually beef, chicken, duck, or pork – that is cooked with coconut milk, makrut lime leaves, fish sauce, palm sugar, and Thai curry paste.
It is then garnished with thinly sliced makrut lime leaves, Thai spur chilli slices and a splash of coconut milk to bring the symphony of flavors to HD.
The origins of faneng curry are as opaque as the curry itself.
“It is often associated with the Malaysian state of Penang, but there is little evidence to support this claim,” writes TasteAtlas.
“However, the earliest known recipe is found in Mao Sohm Jeon’s book Tam Ra Gap Khao, written in 1890.”
Meanwhile, America didn’t fare too well in this truly epic Olympiad, but there were four entries on the list: Central Texas-style BBQ (42), Boiled Maine Lobster (69), Texas-style BBQ (96) and Kansas – Style BBQ (98).
