No hometown pride here.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Governor Tim Walz not only lost the overall election to Donald Trump – he also lost his home county to him.
President-elect Trump’s landslide victory gave him 49.6% of the vote in Minnesota’s Blue Earth County, where Walz’s family had lived for 20 years before he was elected governor.
Walz’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, trailed with about 48.3% of the vote.
This is a contrast from 2020, when now-President Biden easily won the county with 51% of the vote to Trump’s 46.5%. According to Politico.
Walz was born in Nebraska, but as an adult he moved to Blue Earth County, where he taught social studies and coached football at Mankato West High School.
He left the state’s 1st Congressional District for the Democrats in 2006 and represented the area in Congress for 12 years.
Walz then ran for governor in 2018, defeating her Republican opponent by double digits.
Minnesota’s 10 electoral votes ultimately went to Harris on Wednesday morning — but Trump still beat the Democratic ticket when he was the first to reach 270 electoral nods.
Although Minnesota was close to moving in the right direction, the state traditionally supports Democratic candidates, the outlet explained.
The last time the state voted for a Republican for president was Richard Nixon in 1972.
