A transformative infrastructure project is set to begin in Mumbai, notorious for traffic jams. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the construction of a project. 90 kilometer network of ring roads, With an estimated budget of Rs 58,517 crore, this ambitious project called “Mumbai in Minutes” is expected to significantly reduce travel time in the city and surrounding areas, making commuting faster and more efficient.
“Mumbai in Minutes” Project: Vision and Benefits
The “Mumbai in Minutes” project is designed to reduce travel times across the city, with the goal that no journey takes longer than 59 minutes. The scheme connects the outer ring road to the inner ring road, creating an integrated network of urban highways, sea lanes, and roads through forests and bays. This network will allow easy travel to the Gujarat border, Konkan Maharashtra, and Western Maharashtra.
With major infrastructure developments such as the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Wadhwan Port expected to lead to an increase in traffic, the new road network will help manage congestion. Most of these new roads will be tolled, and the project is a collaboration between the MMRDA, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Major infrastructure investments in the region
The ring road project is part of a larger infrastructure build-out in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, estimated to cost a total of ₹3 lakh crore, that includes metro projects, new roads, bridges, flyovers and slum development. The ambitious plans reflect the city's commitment to modernise its transport and housing infrastructure over the next five years.
National Infrastructure Modernisation: Announcement by Nitin Gadkari
As part of a broader initiative to modernise India's infrastructure, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently announced plans for a 14-lane highway connecting Atal Setu to Bengaluru, Pune's ring road and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This new route will reduce traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by up to 50%, making travel much easier for residents of Bengaluru and surrounding areas.
