President-elect Donald Trump chose Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to serve as his attorney general in a surprise selection on Wednesday.
“It is my great honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida has been nominated to be Attorney General of the United States,” Trump wrote in the Truth Social announcement.
“Matt is an extremely talented and tenacious lawyer, trained at the College of William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress by focusing on achieving much-needed reform at the Justice Department. Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan weaponization of our justice system.
“Met will dismantle the gun-toting government, secure our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore Americans’ badly broken trust and confidence in the Justice Department. On the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the DOJ, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia fraud and exposing dangerous and systemic government corruption and weaponization. He is a champion of the Constitution and the rule of law,” the true statement read.
