Former President Donald Trump He joked in a rare late-night talk show appearance Wednesday that “golf is a very dangerous sport” just days after the Secret Service foiled a second assassination attempt against the 2024 Republican nominee.
Trump, 78, joked with the co-hosts of the Fox News show “Gutfeld” hours before his raucous campaign rally on Long Island.
“Well Mr. P, how's your golf game?” comedian Greg Gutfeld asked the former president.
Trump responded, “Well, I haven't been thinking about it much lately. I've always said golf is a very dangerous sport.”
“Especially if they're playing with you,” Gutfeld quipped.
“Yes, that's true. That's very sad,” Trump said.
45th President Averted a second attempt on his life On Sunday, Trump was on a green a few hundred yards from a sniper when Secret Service agents spotted a rifle barrel protruding from bushes near a hole at his golf course in Palm Beach, Florida.
Gutfeld later asked Trump, “If they had told you the shooter was there, would you have tried to hit him with your three wood?”
Trump responded, “I guess so. If I knew.”
“The Secret Service did a pretty good job, actually,” he said. “They saw the barrel of the gun — a big gun — and it came out of the bushes. How many more people would have seen that?”
“He did a really extraordinary job doing that,” Trump said of the sharp-eyed agent.
“We've been through this a lot,” he said of Butler, Pa., and Palm Beach being targeted by would-be assassins. “We're getting pretty good at it. But I don't want to say that too loudly.”
When asked how he took these frightening events, Trump indicated he had come to accept that “being president is a very dangerous job.”
He said, “6% or 7% of people get murdered when they become president.”
The former president revealed that since the Butler shooting he doesn’t “think about death” but rather “think more about God.”
Trump also shared a regrettable comment he made about his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this month.
“I guess my only regret is that I wanted to be elegant, and I didn't want to get behind the anchors. I wish I would have done that,” he said, referring to ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis, who fact-checked the former president multiple times during the confrontation while never doing so for Harris.
According to Fox News, Trump's appearance on the comedy show was recorded in front of a live studio audience.
The outlet said the interview was Trump's first on a broadcast or cable late-night show during the election cycle since his appearance on NBC's “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” in 2016.
