A US Army wife charged with slashing her 11-month-old son’s throat so he could “be with Jesus and God” will claim insanity when she stands trial for murder, according to court records.
Lawyers for April Evalyn Short, 30, who is charged with killing her baby in November at Fort Eisenhower in Augusta, Georgia, plan to call a Justice Department forensic psychologist to the stand, WSAV-TV said.
Short allegedly texted her husband at the base shortly after 8 a.m. on Nov. 15 making references to “God” and claiming “the days of darkness” were coming, the outlet reported.
Her husband raced to get home, where he found his wife had locked herself in the bedroom with the couple’s three children — then tried to get away with the other two kids.
When cops arrived the husband reportedly raced into the bedroom and found the baby covered in blood and wrapped in a shower curtain. The infant was rushed to Eisenhower Army Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, federal prosecutors said after the incident.
Short was indicted on premeditated and felony murder charges in the case and is awaiting trial.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges last year and reportedly told investigators that she knew what she had allegedly done was “wrong” and “evil.”
According to KSAV, the defense witness list for the upcoming trial includes Macy Wilson, a forensic psychologist who works with the Federal Bureau of Prisons under DOJ.
