start new music
On February 9, Usher released his ninth studio album “coming home.”
Composed of 20 concert and radio-ready songs, the record is Usher’s first official release since 2016’s “Hard II Love”.
And, after eight years away from the studio, the consummate showman hasn’t lost a step.
The synthy title track “Coming Home” featuring Burna Boy is a smooth melody that sets the tone; After that, there’s a lengthy ballad in the vintage Billy Joel-sampling “A-Town Girl” featuring Leto, “Kissing Strangers” a perfect ballad that never veers into treacherous territory, and the gleefully goofy “Big.” Rivals “Yeah” for funniest tune in Usher’s back catalog. It’s a gas and a half.
Best of all, however, is “Risk It All,” a slow duet with HER taken from “The Color Purple” soundtrack. As much fun as this record is, it’s nice to see him abandon the fizzy synths and let his powerful vocals carry the weight of the music.
Be sure to give the desperate “Please You”, the trembling “Margiela” and the euphoric “Standing Next To You” remix a try, too. These three are delicious pieces of pop.
