Virginia teaching assistant charged with sex crime, second employee arrested at school this year

A teaching assistant in Virginia was arrested after a student caught her masturbating at her desk, making her the second staff member at a Fairfax County high school to face sex crimes charges this academic year.

David Scalia, 40, was in class at Langley High School on October 11 when he allegedly began touching himself inappropriately behind a desk. A student caught him in the act and reported it to the school administrator, who also informed the resource officer.

Scalia was immediately arrested and charged with indecent sexual exposure and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, both misdemeanors.

Fairfax County Public Schools suspended Scalia without pay. He was a teaching assistant at FCPS since 2020.

Barely three months into school, Langley High School now has two employees facing charges for various sexual acts involving minors.

In August, near the beginning of the academic session, a teacher, who also served as the school’s football coach, was arrested on five counts of sexual assault of a minor.

Police caught the coach, 48-year-old David Clay Murray, communicating with minors through the cell phone messaging app Telegram after he unknowingly started chatting with a policeman posing as a teenage girl. Murray allegedly tried to solicit different sexual acts multiple times during the messaging.

According to charging documents, Murray wrote in one message, “Santa may be harsh if you act cruel.”

“Santa would go crazy with you in his lap.”

Murray’s lawyer said his client thought he was interacting with an adult who claimed to “role play” as a teenage girl.

The school principal sent a letter to parents trying to reaffirm their collective dedication to making the school safe, which appeared to help inspire confidence for some parents.

“I can imagine this must have been difficult for Langley to handle. We love Langley so much, we love the school, but we have to make sure our kids are safe and that’s something that needs to be addressed,” said Lisa Durant, mother of a Langley student. fox5 dc,

Fairfax County Schools assures that they conduct rigorous background checks as part of their hiring process. The school district announced last year that it would implement new measures to require ongoing background checks for all employees.
