Tim Walz apparently made a mistake in responding to school shootings, saying he has become “friends” with the shooters.
The moderator asked Walz how he changed his mind about banning “assault weapons” during his career.
“I was sitting in that office with those Sandy Hook parents. I became friends with the shooters in school. I’ve seen it,” Walz said.
He also said he kept his gun in the back of his car so he could “hunt pheasants” after “soccer practice.”
Walz said that if America wants to stop school shootings, we should look to Finland.
“They didn’t let that happen,” the Minnesota governor said. “Even though they have the highest gun-ownership rates in the country, there are some reasonable things we can do to make a change.”
Walz suggested that the federal government had a role in “getting some of these weapons out of there” – but did not specify which one.
Vance responded, “I really appreciate what Tim said about Finland, because I think it highlights some of the weird differences between our own country’s gun violence problem and Finland’s.”
The Ohio senator said that unlike the Scandinavian nation, the US is struggling with high rates of depression and anxiety.
