A water main break on the Upper West Side on Wednesday sent massive amounts of water into a New York City subway station, bringing two lines to a halt as water gushed off the platform and onto the tracks.
The C and B lines were suspended until 7 p.m. as frustrated commuters faced massive delays getting home the day before Thanksgiving.
The water main broke around 1:45 p.m., affecting surface streets on the Upper West Side. Drivers were forced to detour around pools of water on the road near Central Park as FDNY and NYPD personnel directed traffic.
A torrent of water entered the 103rd Street and Central Park West station, According to social media footage. Several feet of water can be seen on the tracks.
In addition to the two-line suspension, straphangers are also dealing with a partial suspension on the A, E and D lines, along with delays to the 1, 3, F, M and Q trains Wednesday evening, according to the MTA’s service status.
Mayor Eric Adams said the water was turned off around 3 p.m. as officials tried to fix the problem.
“Now our partners at the MTA are already restoring service on the A, B, C and D lines,” Adams said during an unrelated press conference Wednesday evening. “For the eight affected buildings, we have water available, so residents can be assured they have water.”
Passengers get upset due to wet interruption in travel
“When I first came here, there were police and all these other people blocking traffic,” traveler Alex Fables. told CBS 2.
“I’m going to go home but obviously I can’t do that right now.”
Another passenger wanted to return home to New Jersey.
“I tried to go over there, but they had everything taped off with yellow tape,” Farana McCoy told the station.
“I would like to go home, because I am tired and am heading towards Jersey. So my commute just started.
An email sent to the MTA was not immediately returned Wednesday evening.
