They’ve reached a (no) tipping point.
Apparently, the guilt-tipping trend isn’t limited to the US: A man in Hungary was dumbfounded after getting hit up for a 20% gratuity at a water park’s self-service kiosk, which he detailed in a viral Reddit post.
The man had reportedly been stopping by a stand to buy a refreshment when he was propositioned for the extra moola.
“A water park in Hungary asking for a 0-20% tip for a self-serve kiosk that sells popsicles and drinks,” lamented the visitor.
Accompanying pics show the checkout screen, which has options for a zero, five, 10, 15 or 20 percent gratuity.
Reddit viewers were appalled by the extortionate-seeming tip request with one exclaiming, “The cancer is spreading.”
“I only see that 0%” snarked another.
Many blamed US travelers for spreading tipping culture around the globe.
“It’s mostly American tourists who don’t bother following local customs and tip like in America,” rued one Redditor. “I see it traveling in places South America where the customary tip was 10%, but now it’s going up to 15% to even 20% because of Americans.”
One USA defender retorted, “Oh yes it must be Americans causing the issue not global inflation and POS companies under paying workers.”
Either way, the US tip-flation trend seems to be conquering the globe like a gratuity Genghis Khan.
First, cafes and brasseries in Paris were busted requesting an extra 20% ahead of the summer Olympics — and now pubs across the United Kingdom are also requesting an extra dollop of dough.
“It’s not normal for us to give a tip when I’ve had to go to the bar and wait in a queue, and all they do is give me a drink,” said Juliette Layne, a 59-year-old project manager in London.
