We listen and let the psychologist decide.
One of TikTok’s current viral trends involves couples confessing each other’s secrets on camera.
video starts with both people saying“We listen and we don’t judge,” in unison, before revealing secret information they had hidden from the other person.
Co-workers and family members have embraced the trend, but most videos feature couples sharing their secrets.
However, to some people the “not judging” part seems to be more of an argument than a reality.
In some of the most viral videos, couples have admitted to everything from unplugging the internet router to faking orgasms to get their partner’s attention instead of watching TV.
In A particularly hilarious videoA married couple goes through revelations and takes great pains to keep their reactions in check.
But at the end of the two-minute clip, the wife, Jamie, declares, “You’re done,” before she walks away and her husband, Dave, laughs loudly.
Many people have shared strong opinions about this trend in the comments, but psychologist Avigail Lev is mostly “ambivalent” about it.
“It seems like this trend is promoting honesty because you’re telling your partner or your friend everything you’ve done,” Lev told today.com,
“But it’s not as honest or transparent because most of the things are things they’ve done behind each other’s backs.”
While some confessions are minor – like stealing the kid’s fries or some ice cream – others are more worrying – like faking headaches and bathroom breaks to hide from each other and lying about getting Botox.
“I think the dilemma here is that some of the things that people are doing, I wouldn’t recommend saying it differently. I would just advise not to do that,” she says. “It’s better not to lie at first so you don’t have to confess.”
The audience will never really know which confessions are true and which are clickbait, but Lev is worried that people may be offended by the video.
“They’re hearing things they didn’t know their partner was doing, and that’s not a fun thing to watch when you’re live on TikTok,” he said.
However, if the confession is not hurtful then this video Can be a fun way to communicate honestly And meet your partner.
“When you can bring humor to it, it’s always easier to express yourself,” Dylan Reese told TODAY.com after one of the trend’s best versions went viral.
