Doran told Cross that he, too, is a fellow sufferer, and asked: “Do you think we're getting better, doc, like you did when you raised your hand and said, 'I have an anxiety problem?'

“'I've also had serious problems with depression over the last few years, but I think people are still too scared to come forward and say it.'”

Cross said Doran speaking out was “amazing”, adding that “the more we talk about it the better it gets”.

Elsewhere, the psychologist said “mental health in the workplace is a huge issue.

“We have a lot of bad people in healthcare. Nurses, doctors, therapists, everybody. They don't want to open up about themselves.

“So that's what I write about. If we're not open about ourselves, how can we treat people who come to us for care properly?”

“And then a siege mentality develops because we're understaffed. So we're stretched thin. And then we feel overwhelmed. And what happens?

“You take your anger out on people who come to you for help because you can't face them. That's a problem.”
